1891 Assessor's Plat Books

The information contained on these pages were copied from the original 1891 Assessor's Plat Books for 8 of the 13 townships in Putnam County, Indiana. Those townships include Cloverdale, Floyd, Greencastle, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Russell and Washington.

Some of the names were very difficult to read due to illegible penmanship, faded or smeared ink, scratch-outs, and rewrites. Additionally, all of the names were entered and spelled by the assessor, so many names may have been misspelled and often are not consistent.

We hope that this 1891 plat index will be of some help as a susbstitute for the 1890 Federal Census that was destroyed. However, unlike the Federal Census, which listed household names residing in the county, the Assessor's Plat Books listed taxpaying property owners. They did not necessarily live there, they merely owned the property.

An 'x' appearing under the heading "List" means that the name appears in the list of names, while an 'x' appearing under the heading "Plat" means the name appears on the plat map.
