Local History and Genealogy Department

Putnam County Public Library's Local History and Genealogy Department is located in the northwest corner of the library. Appropriately, this is the old part of the library. The unique old architecture and stained glass windows makes a visit to the department worthwhile if for no other reason than simply to enjoy the atmosphere. In 1996 the library was expanded to more than double its size. During the expension process most of the old building was left untouched.

Local History & Genealogy Dept.

Along with the other resources that the Local History and Genealogy Department has at its disposal (see the list of resources in the left sidebar), there is also a microfiche machine with printer capabilities for searching through microfilms and a patrons' computer terminal and printer with full access to Ancestry.com and HeritageQuestOnline.com A copy machine is also available along with a friendly staff ready to answer your questions..

If you live nearby it is recommended that you come visit us in person. However, if you do not live in the area, please contact us by letter, e-mail or telephone. Unless your question is a fairly simple one, it is usually best to write to us by letter or e-mail with as much detail as you can provide as to the nature of your inquiry. We cannot, of course, conduct research while on the telephone and the letter or e-mail provides us with written information that we can always return to in order to refresh our memories as needed. The staff will then do their best to answer your questions by letter or e-mail. Although the department does not charge for research conducted by its staff, if you are requesting that copies of materials be mailed to you, a small donation to cover copying and mailing expenses is requested.
